Let’s be clear: media outlets could have been doing this for YEARS. It’s not some new, shocking, innovative discovery that talking about Larry draws attention.
So how come it’s happening NOW from a media outlet that JUST had an OT5 interview?

The PR stunts are MM/HJPR’s idiotic tactics for maintaining their clients’ fame. Any publicity is good publicity. It keeps their names in the tabloids and it keeps people talking, which maintains interest and generates money. I just wish they’d use less sleazy means of going about it. Ways that would actually protect their clients’ images and focus a more on the music and the friendships rather than who’s leaving the band and who’s banging who. A change like that would actually give them a good rep and make people take them seriously. It would broaden their audience and demographic. The band is bound by contracts so dropping Modest isn’t realistically in the cards at the moment but IF it were, I think I’ve heard Elton John’s management is somewhat decent? Rocket Music Management. Last year when people were speculating whether or not the boys’ contract with Modest was going to be up, I remember people hoping they’d go under Rocket.

It kind of varies depending on how much drama there is. On high drama days I get at least 20+. On low drama days I usually get less than 20. Right now I’ve still got some to catch up on. The ones that require more time like master post requests and headcanons take me a little longer to get to (fyi for those waiting for me to answer!)

this is why stunts work. all you need to do is plant that seed and people who aren’t really paying attention or who aren’t looking into things will remember “cheryl pregnant”. this happens ALL THE TIME. and not just with celebrities but like the election stuff was a good example too. i saw a lot of that with the anti-hillary stuff.
this is why louis and babygate works on people - no one is out there like - wait he hasn’t had a DNA test? because most people read the headline and assume all those loose ends have already been tied up.
and the DM is STILL using brian friedman as the “confirmation” even though he denied it on twitter.
Why are people still trying to make sense and analyse a bearded couple?
Are they going to look like a couple? Yes, it’s what they’re aiming at.
Are they going to do couply stuff? Yes, it’s the whole purpose of the bearding.
Are they going to go over the top to overcompensate? Yes, so people notice the shiny maid of honour dress and not the cracks that fill the surface.
If you look closely, will you see right through it? Most likely. Yes. Especially if one of the sides is fed up with everything.
Every damn picture, every damn event is the same thing. There’s the people who choose to believe celebrities are completely transparent and that one thing compensates for 10. People who choose to believe that “there’s no way they would do that if it wasn’t a real relationship!” when literally, in the past, there’s been marriages, kids, fake pregnancies and DEATH to try and cover up homosexual relationships or “inappropriate” relationships. Get that out of your head there’s NOTHING people wouldn’t do to protect themselves and those they love if they feel they have to. NOTHING.

it is a shame. louis was the ORIGINAL stylish one. Sooo… Brinini posts a badly photoshopped picture of herself, the british tabloids ignore that it’s obviously fake and pick it up in a heartbeat (I see your usual bullshit, Simon) and just a few hours later Harry and Louis do UA/pap walks after being MIA for weeks.

Not only did they deserve to be where they are because they are genuinely talented and they earned it, BUT THEY WANTED IT SO FUCKING BAD.

The press and promo events are likely not the sole factor in some of these appearances (Dallas, specifically, comes to mind) but I do believe they played an important role in the beginning of the that “relationship” and One Direction’s American breakthrough at large.

You know, the interesting thing about this message is that I hadn’t heard that they’re scheduled to appear on America’s Got Talent (I assume it’s America and not Britain, since that’s where they’ll be at the time?), nor can I find any evidence of it online. So how do you know that?
And no, I don’t think the airing of a 12-second video — that they filmed several months ago — on a UK game show is noteworthy promo. Nor is the filming of a tour DVD that won’t be released until December.
I’m talking about the things happening — or not happening — right now that got people interested in this band in the first place, and have any hope of drawing in new fans: interviews, talk show appearances, TV performances.
If they really are performing on America’s Got Talent later this summer, that’s great. Doesn’t make me think that they’re being adequately promo’d right now, or that favoriting porn tweets is an intentional/acceptable promo strategy.
And suddenly the actual reason I have a problem with the ask above became very clear to me: all three examples still render the boys voiceless.
They’ve stopped doing interviews. They’ve stopped doing Twitter/Instagram questions. We’re left with Twitter — which is the most controlled possible vocal expression from the boys, and we can’t even trust that it’s actually them — pap shots — which, come on — and concerts sans questions but with heavy restrictions, apparently (though the boys are still finding a few ways to be heard and express themselves, including rainbow shirts, nail polish, expressions of approval toward Larry arms and rainbow flags, and the very very occasional lyric change [I can think of two from this tour]). Right now, arguably the best opportunity they have to break narrative is in concert, and they’re still so limited there that they have to get creative.
What this comes down to is that the boys have lost avenues through which to influence the narrative and express their own voices.
And as for the examples in the ask above:
A super brief, scripted clip airing on a game show does not let the boys’ voices be heard.
A TV performance lets the boys’ singing voices be heard, but not the voices that I’m talking about.
And unless “I’d do Niall” and “Happy pride!” wind up on the tour DVD, I’m guessing that production isn’t going to let their voices be heard either.
If this is the best you can come up with in terms of current promo — heavily produced, heavily edited, very much out of the boys’ control — then I’m going to say that it looks a lot like 1DHQ is very interested in keeping the boys as silent as possible.
And based on what we’ve gotten from the boys when their voices were heard recently — mocking their merch in the weedgate video, “I have a secret” in the Scott Mills interview, noncooperation with/obvious disdain for the PR narratives during the Colombia press conference, “I’d do Niall”/”Happy pride!” — I can’t say I’m surprised.
But I hope they’re cooking up some really good countermoves.
